I love this. The bean is like my first born child. Wark is at the Olympics and unable to answer questions, so let me jump in here for him and hit on some.
The Bean is tag, plain and simple. You don't want it. Give it away however you can, preferably without alerting the coaching staff that you are not fully concentrating on workout. You are safe only on the wall. We really only had one rule, giving it to someone coming into or pushing off the wall was dirty bean and those people didn't get to play very long.
Josh Ilika broght the Bean to Texas, Erik Vendt and Klete Keller brought it to Michigan. So for a decade it was only at SC, now it's everywhere. Keep it going.

Shame? That's good.

how does is bring shame? it shows that pro swimmers can have fun and not be so serious all the time! and getting punished for playing a game!?!?!? thats just crazy talk!!!

This so-called "Bean" is an abomination- it brings shame to the sport. I sincerely hope that the ones responsible for the perpetration of this terrible act are punished by FINA and USA Swimming.

I am a member of the missing 10th generation of Bean at USC. Sadly I was really one of the only members of the 10th generation due to the sudden arrival of a sprint group. However the Bean has not died at USC, but the 11th generation which includes aforementioned sprinters and a group of freshman are not very good. Remember seniority in Bean is only based on the time you've been playing not your actual age, this goes especially true for foreign players.

is there another sight you can go to find out how to play the bean?

all these guys' lives are swimming. i wish i could have that life. well, looks like i have some work to do!

My team was introduced to the bean about a month ago. We only play during cool down and if you get stuck with the bean at the end of cool down its 25 pushups. its a nice little incentive to get rid of the bean quick. we play that you cant pass the bean when there on the wall and you can only pass the bean with your feet. your not aloud to say you have the bean but if you passed it, your aloud to say who you passe it to.

it's crazy, this video has started an almost unbelievable amount of Bean talk with our team right before conference. We've been limiting ourselves to just warmup Bean because of taper, but even so, every wall someone is talking about it and the rules and whatnot. It's awesome!
saw the longhorns play this at their all american meet a few years back, funny game

do you have to tag with your foot or can you use hands?

Though the Trojans are the rightful heirs to the Bean, dark days have fallen upon them and they have lost their way. History tells us that the 9th generation showed great Bean strength but how great was it if they didn%u2019t pass the Bean to a 10th generation?
A small number of 5th, 6th and 7th generation players remain active, having become mercenaries and journeymen. These swimmers continue to carry the Bean with them but all know that the rightful home of the Bean is in waters of their alma mater. When will the Trojans reclaim what is theirs?

Due to Garrett releasing this video of the Bean and therefore creating Beanmania, eventually Kauffman is going to have to add the "10th Generation" to the History of the Bean page.
It should be understood by all potential players that a game of BEAN ends when the player holding the BEAN is the only player still in the water. You don't just find some unsuspecting non-player to pass it to in order to get rid of it. I suppose I should have included this important fact in the rules, but it was common knowledge among the players at USC.
I realize that rule S-1006b is a bit vague and is thus open to interpretation, but you need understand it in the context of the time.
No one ever thought about including girls in the game until Rule S-1006 was published. Rule S-1006b was later created as an addendum because of a lack of available players in the fall of 2000. At that time most of the players were either in Sydney, had recently retired, or were taking an extended break from training. The few of us that remained were like crack addicts that needed our daily fix of BEAN. It was agreed that a few girls would be allowed to enter the game of BEAN for a short time to get the game started that season. There was an understanding that when the real players returned or when the freshmen figured out how to play that girls would be removed from the game. Hopefully that clarifies the confusion.
Only include girls as a last resort, history has proved repeatedly that girls always screw up the game.
Mark, are the rules on the website below the correct rules? I assume they are because you cite them. S-1006b states nothing about starting a game when there are insufficient BEAN players available. In fact, the words "allow girls to enter the game" suggests a game that is already in progress. If you all truly meant the rule to apply only when starting a game why didn't you say that?
It seems as though the Self-Proclaimed King of the BEAN must clarify the rules. As the inventor of the rules and the most important player in the history of the game I cannot allow the integrity of the game to be tarnished by those with very little BEAN knowledge. Based upon video analysis, Adam Mania finished the game with the BEAN. In his situation, a decent BEAN player would attempt to find another real BEAN player (there were probably dozens in the warm-dowm pool at the time of the incident) or take the BEAN home for the day. ***Taking the BEAN home is more appropriate than finding a girl to continue the game.*** Rule S-1006b was invented for the purpose of STARTING a game when there are insufficient BEAN players available, not for continuing a game that has reached its natural conclusion.

Mania was justified to tag Katie Hoff. From the rules that have been posted:
"S-1006a - Girls are not allowed to play BEAN.*
* S-1006b - In the event that no BEAN players are available it is acceptable to allow girls to enter the game as long as they know that as soon as the real BEAN players return they can no longer play."
So let's stop calling him stupid, when he was playing the game right. Plus, the video is just fun to watch. I agree with Art it is good to see the best having fun, and that is what we should take away from it.
