First, I watched Michael Phelps on 60 Minutes Sunday night. The next day, i saw an interview with the author of a recent Mark Spitz biography. Then finally, the nail in the coffin came with Darian Townsend's excellent blog about the unpredictability of training and rest. The Phelps and Spitz interviews brought into focus a topic that has often concerned me. There is a deep tradition in our sport to want to make models out of the top athletes. The belief is that because a swimmer is a World record holder or Olympic Gold medalist, they must have the best technique/training/mentality. Phelps is the most famous and successful athlete in our sport, so he is the most often modeled. But before him it was Thorpe, and probably Popov before that and Biondi before that (with various stroke swimmers in the other strokes). I have a vivid memory of when Denis Pankratov had the "perfect" stroke. On top of this, how many times have we heard of Phelps' yardage or gotten glimpses of workouts. What's the curiousity? People want to see how the best train. I read an article once that talked about how much Grant Hackett can bench! Also, we heard perpetually about the "surfer cool" psyche of Aaron Peirsol. The truth is, there is a lot to admire about the best athletes in our sport. They are on top because they do all the things that go into fast swimming above average. They are exceptional in many ways. By using them for modeling, most swimmers can see some part of what made those swimmers successful and hopefully emulate it. But there's a danger to modeling. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, as I mentioned above, about the "perfect" stroke. In the interview I saw with Spitz, the author talked about Spitz going into the flume prior to his 1992 "comeback" and how the flume still had him with a "perfect" stroke. Lets roll footage: Does that look perfect to you? Should every swimmer emulate that stroke? How about Denis Pankratov's butterfly? A lot to admire certainly. But when Michael Klim surpassed Pankratov as world's best, was it proof that he was better in all respects? No. The sum of Michael Klim's performance was better, but the difference is so slight that I can comfortably say that there are some parts of Klim that were inferior to Pankratov. You could apply this to any of the "models". To further complicate matters, it is likely that there exists a perfect technique/training/psyche for Phelps that is likely not to be perfect for another athlete like Thorpe. Much the same, the formula for success for any of you is likely to not be identical to Phelps. Darian Townsend talked about what he thought was an excellent training plan and well-executed taper. Then he spent some time resting far more than he would ever consider and swam faster. This is not an uncommon phenomenon in our sport. The last point that I want to address is that of strengths and weaknesses. Often as coaches and swimmers, we can focus really intently on our weaknesses. Looking at one of these "perfect" strokes side by side with our own, you can see a lot of flaws. At the same time, you have to keep in mind that your relative level of success has come from doing a lot of things right. If I were a pessimistic coach looking at Phelps, I would have this commentary: "Not a lot of sprint speed. Poor breaststroke kick". Bob Bowman could spend all his time trying to make Phelps more of a sprinter and hone his breaststroke kick, but that would be ignoring some pretty obvious strengths. At the same time you are addressing weaknesses, you must keep your strengths in mind. To use another example, Aaron Peirsol was not an invincible backstroker in yards because the other swimmers of his caliber were slightly better at turns and dolphin kick. Does that mean he should spend all his time trying to make his underwater dolphin as good as Tomomi Morita or should he get even better at what he's already doing great on top of the water? The things you do best in the pool have a lot to do with your own unique talents. Imagine if they had made Albert Einstein keep repeating grade school to get it right...   Chris DeSantis http://www.floswimming.org/blogs/blogger/Chris DeSantis/5251-the-pros-and-cons-of-modeling-finding-a-unique-formula Wed, 03 Dec 2008 05:06:00 -0500 Kick Set @ Auburn [Video] http://www.floswimming.org/videos/speaker/558-richard-quick 4 rounds of 4x50 on 1:30 (LCM) Round 1 is followed by a 100 Round 2 is followed by a 200 Round 3 is followed by a 300 Round 4 is followed by a 400 Everything is FAST Tunes: Abbotfinney, "Working All The Time" Floswimming http://www.floswimming.org/videos/speaker/558-richard-quick Wed, 03 Dec 2008 01:25:00 -0500 How Long Can You Really Hold A Taper? By Darian Townsend [Blog Entry] http://www.floswimming.org/blogs/blogger/Darian Townsend/5246-how-long-can-you-really-hold-a-taper I used to think I could only do one good shave meet on a season's training. Boy was I wrong! Leading up to Beijing this year I put in a solid 4 months training after our South African trials in early April. I really dedicated myself to doing everything the coaches asked me to do and sometimes even more. My results in Beijing were a testament to the hard work I put in and I was happy with the results. But to be totally honest I wasn't thrilled with my performances, I felt like I could have gone faster. It is only now, 4 months later, that I realize where I went wrong. I don't know the exact stats but something like only 40 or 50 % of swimmers do their best times at the Olympics which is really weird because you would think that at an event like the Olympics people would be psyched up and do amazing things, but sadly I believe many swimmers over train in the months leading up the Olympics or if they don't over train, then they don't rest enough. This is where I believe I went wrong; I simply didn't rest enough. I didn't take a long break after Beijing, maybe a couple of days because I wanted to do the World Cup circuit. For those of you who don’t know about the Circuit, it consists of 7 short course meter meets in 7 different countries over the span of almost 2 months. So you are constantly travelling to a different country to compete in a 2 day meet. So needless to say you can't go into this circuit out of shape! After Beijing I simply kept in touch with the water, only swimming once a day of no more than 5000 yards and I also played water polo 3 times a week. The results have been amazing. I am now ranked 1st this year in the world in 100 IM, second in the 200 IM, 3rd in the 200 free and 5th in the 100 free. Going into the meets I had no idea of what to expect, I really hadn't challenged myself too much in practice, so I was really guessing at how I would swim. I can honestly believe that all the training I did for Beijing paid off, it didn't get me the results I wanted in Beijing, but a couple months later it paid off at these meets where I had no expectations. So for those of you who think you can't swim fast in more than one shave meet, take a look back at all the training you've done, all the laps you've swam, all the miles you've run, all the weights you've lifted and then ask yourself, surely I can swim fast more than once! I come from South Africa and have now been in the States for almost 5 years. I started my college swimming career at the University of Florida straight after the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 where I was apart of the South African 400 free relay team that won gold and broke the world record. I have since transferred to the University of Arizona where I swam my Junior and Senior year as a wildcat. I am currently finishing off my degree in Sociology and swimming professionally. I will be blogging on Floswimmr from time to time, but if any of you have any questions about swimming or anything, please feel free to shoot me a message or facebook me. Thanksgiving is over and you've read a hundred different lists of things to be thankful for. Maybe you family, like mine, each takes turns listing what they are thankful for before they wrestle over drumsticks and gravy boats. Still, I've been meaning to write this blog for quite some time. I thought about waiting for my one year anniversary at floswimming (coming up in January) but I just couldn't wait. This blog is my thank you to you, the floswimming consumer. I can tell you honestly that I never expected my involvement in the site to be so much fun. Going to my first national meet and having it be this summer's Olympic Trials was quite a trip. I get a thrill when anyone drops a comment in the box below my blog because I know that means at least one person read it. But there's one gratifying moment that I haven't had a chance to share, at least publically. Probably about once a week, I get an e-mail with a subject heading like: "You are doing unbelievable work for swimming". That was an actual heading from a parent of an 11 year old swimmer i got at the beginning of August this summer. Just a week ago I ran into blog reader Drew Schneider at a meet I was coaching. I ran the timing for our club meet, ran into a fan of the site who happened to be a doctor doing gene research and one week later found over a hundred pages of swimming science related abstracts on my desk. In a habit that I've unfortunately not held myself too over the past few months, I used to send a personal message to everyone who friended me on floswimmr. I wanted to get to know every single person who was my friend in this context. The stories I got back were fantastic and inspiring. This is a place for people who are passionate about swimming. If you're one of my more recent friends, please don't hesitate to write me a message and tell me about yourself. I think you probably know a bit about me at this point. Every single one of these messages has been positive and uplifting. I love hearing people talk about why they care about swimming and what they want to do with the time they have in it. So take this blog as my thanks to everyone who has reached out to me and given me a lot of inspiration over the past year. You are what makes me want to keep contributing to this site whatever I can. I'll see if I can stop myself from waiting almost a year to thank you next time. And so far, it’s working. Mr. Coach understands and endorses her strategy. As he so helpfully expressed it when she presented him with her 95-Percent Strategy theory, "When you haven’t grown up doing something, it’s easy to try too hard. It takes 1-2 years for you to learn how to do something new correctly." (Mrs. Coach restrained herself from pointing out that it only took her four hours to correctly get from childless to motherhood, but that’s mostly because that whole "voluntary versus involuntary muscle action" discussion would have been so 1993.) Little Mr. Coach is not so supportive of the 95-Percent Strategy. The first time he heard his mother mention it, he stepped back (as if expecting the lightning bolt to arrive any second) and gasped, "WHY wouldn’t you give it 100 percent?!" (Mind you, this is the kid who, when his mother told him, "We just want you to have fun, honey, whether you come in first or last," snarled, "WHY would you want me to come in last?!" One of Little Mr. Coach’s other nicknames is "Mr. Literal.") But Little Mr. Coach has grown up swimming so he’s learned, without having to really think about it, how one doles out the adrenalin, endorphins and oxygen and comes up with a performance that is an honest reflection of one’s fitness level. Mrs. Coach dives in and it’s like a symphony goes off in her head. The treble line goes something like, "Was that too deep? Too shallow? Wiggle-butt, wiggle-butt, wiggle-butt, crap, I’m running out of air, where’s the surf–, crap, there’s the surface, smooth, rotate, smooth, rotate, keep it smooth, crap, there’s the wall, flip!" and so on. And the bass line just goes something like, "KICK! KICK! KICK!" The goal of course is to get it to the point where it’s all instinctual, where she can blank out and enter that lovely "out-of-body" state she so often enjoyed in track races, where she did know what the heck she was doing and was therefore able to forget what the heck she was doing and get 100 percent out of her body. Until then, however, she’ll be giving it 95 percent and taking 100 percent of whatever she can get. Where were you for the conclusion of the greatest Olympic performance in history? 17 races, 8 days, 7 world records, 8 olympic records, 8 Gold Medals, 1 blue print that Bob Bowman worked to perfection. Bowman learned how to develop the elite Olympian as a young assistant under Paul Bergan during the Tracy Caulkins era. It's a game plan that has been in the works for well over a decade. The Olympic portion began when he was still a boy, as he burst onto the five ringed scene at 15. Four years later was the test run. Bowman and his boy wonder were venturing into uncharted territory in 2004 and they still managed to walk away from Athens with 6 golds. After the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne any educated swim fan had to see this coming.  Thank goodness for Alain Bernard and Milarod Cavic. Without worthy opponents, Phelps's feat would lose its luster. Cavic's quotes provided something that American sports commentators make their living on... drama. Phelps losing the 100 fly wouldn't have been good for swimming, but Cavic saying it would be was. Without a little trash talk, the 4x100 free relay wouldn't have felt as sweet for the American swim fan. This was a huge step for swimming because of those contributions.  Enjoy the moment Michael. Enjoy the fact that you are the biggest star on the planet right now. You've said for a while now that your goal is to bring the sport to the next level, and you've done that. Now in these next few months we all have to figure out how to exist on this new level you've carried us to...   Floswimming http://www.floswimming.org/articles/view/523-8 Sat, 16 Aug 2008 22:18:00 -0500 Jason Lezak For President By Floswimming [Article] http://www.floswimming.org/articles/view/507-jason-lezak-for-president 50 meters away from the French following through on their trash talk. 25 meters away from Phelps falling short of eight golds. 10 meters of the best relay finish ever. 4 seconds under the World Record. Phelps AR (47.51), Webber-Gale (47.02), Jones (47.65), LEZAK (46.06)! What a cherry on top of the greatest swimming session in history. 4 world records. Women's 100 Back, Kirsty Coventry (58.77). Men's 100 Breast, Kosuke Kitajima (58.91). Men's 100 Free, Eamon Sullivan (47.24 Relay lead-off). Men's 4x100 Free Relay (4:08.24).
